The Lit & Phil

Alison Menzies

A Conspicuous Situation: How Newcastle’s Lit & Phil arrived on Westgate Street

A book that began life during lockdown, we are delighted to celebrate the second printing of Alison Menzies’ fascinating account of the history of the site of the library up to its opening in 1825. Starting with the Roman period, the book’s first part leads us, via Norman invaders and medieval barons to Jacobean merchants and Georgian gentry, to the notorious occasion of the laying of the Lit & Phil’s foundation stone in 1822 by the Duke of Sussex. Part two follows the vicissitudes of the Lit & Phil’s building project. Today’s venerable exterior betrays nothing of the disputatious nature of progress towards the day in 1825 when the completion of the Society’s permanent home could be declared. Prepare to be fascinated and intrigued.

Alison Menzies is a retired teacher and Lit & Phil member. All proceeds from book sales will go to the Lit & Phil.
